Outlook Express Setup

Windows 98 includes both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook Express. What follows are simple step by step instructions for configuring these programs to browse the web and to send and receive email.

If you have any problems or need assistance with any part of this installation, you may contact our technical support staff at the numbers listed on your Startup Kit. If you are able to connect and check your e-mail, Technical Support can be reached here.

PART A - Configure Internet Explorer

  1. Click on 'Start | Settings | Control Panel'. Double-click on the icon named 'Internet' or 'Internet Explorer'.

If this icon does not appear, you may need to contact our Technical Support staff for assistance in installing a web browser.

  2. The Internet Setup Wizard may begin. If it does, select, My computer is already set up for the Internet' and then click on 'Next'. Double click on the 'Internet' icon again.
  3. Select the 'General' tab at the top of the 'Internet Properties' window.
  4. Type the address of the page you wish to start with each time you open Internet Explorer. We recommend that you type 'http://abi.tconline.net/' in the 'Address' field.
  5. Click on the 'Connection' tab, make sure it is set to connect with a modem, and that the TConline connection is selected or is set as the default connection. Select 'Dial whenever a network connection is not present' and click on 'OK'.

PART B - Connect to TConline

  1. Double-click on the 'Internet Explorer' icon on your desktop. If there is no IE icon on the desktop, click on 'Start' | 'Programs' | 'Internet' | 'Internet Explorer'.
  2. Enter your username as it appears on your confirmation packet.
  3. Enter your password exactly as it appears in your confirmation packet.
  4. Watch for 'L's that look like '1's (ones) and 'O's that look like '0's (zeros). Also, check to be sure that you're typing capital and lower-case letters appropriately.
  5. Some installations of Windows will allow you to check the 'Save Password' field, which will allow you to connect to TConline in the future without having to re-enter your password. Normally, this option will become available after your first successful connection with TConline.
  6. Click on 'Connect'. This will dial and connect you to the Internet. Once connected, you may then launch any Internet applications you have on your computer in addition to the Microsoft Internet Explorer.
